Blood vs Urine Drug Tests

Which Drug Test is Best?

uTest Drug Tests

Have you ever wondered why a majority of home drug tests are designed for urine? We get this question often, and so we thought it would be a great idea to discuss these two methods of testing.

A blood test detects the presence of a drug in your blood, not the metabolites created by your body like a urine test. This type of test is relatively rare because it’s much more costly to administer. The sample must be drawn in a controlled environment, such as a doctor's office or clinic. It cannot be judged quickly like a urine test and must be sent off for further analysis. The length of time for a drug to be detectable can also vary from blood to urine. For example, in blood, THC is usually detectable in 24 hours or less.

Urine tests have a couple of benefits. As we mentioned, they are much more cost-effective. They are also flexible, in that they can be designed to test at different cut-off levels. For example, the gold standard for THC urine testing is 50 ng/mL. We offer a 50 ng/mL test, as well as a 20 ng and 15 ng. These sensitive tests give you a little more peace of mind before you have to go in for a mandatory lab test.
